Picturesque hike from Maishofen to Zell am See
A SUNNY VALLEY HIKE IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE PAINTER ANTON FAISTAUER FROM HIS HOMETOWN MAISHOFEN TO THE ZELLER SEE.
Far to the south rises the glacier-covered Glockner group, to the north the Stone Sea defines the horizon. In between spreads a sun-flooded basin, providing enough space for settlements, agricultural land, and even the Zeller See. In this area, the important painter Anton Faistauer (1887 – 1930) lived and worked for a long time. The community of Maishofen honors its most famous son with a themed trail comprising 10 stations. Our hike to Zell am See passes some of these. The excellently designed picture panels offer insights into the artist’s world, but actually the entire path presents itself like a walk through his studio. The elegant hunting lodges, the farm animals on the pastures, the lush nature with the charming lake form a wonderfully coherent overall picture. The path is accessible year-round and a pleasure in every season.

From the train station or bus stop, the first destination is the parish church in the center of Maishofen, as it houses the votive altar, a major work by Anton Faistauer. Opposite in the Gasthof Post was his childhood home, and the artist, who died too early from an internal hemorrhage, is buried in the northern cemetery. From the Anton Faistauer square, a 1 km long access road leads to Schloss Kammer. In front of this romantic country inn, the path branches off to the right into the alley towards “Mayerhofen” and leads with a short ascent over the Steinberg (767 m) to a junction. Up to the railway underpass, the route now follows the “Meadows & Alleys Round” (path 15) for 1 km, then we switch to the southbound path “To the Lake.” Along the 1.2 km path to the Zeller See lies the former princely episcopal hunting lodge Prielau, which was briefly owned by the family of the Jedermann author Hugo von Hofmannsthal, a close friend of Faistauer. Shortly thereafter, the route turns right onto the lakeside path and leads two varied kilometers later to the access to Zell am See station.
