FROM ST. GILGEN-AICH ON SHADY PATHS TO THE SCHAFBERGALM AND THEN WITH OR WITHOUT THE SUMMIT, ON FOOT OR BY THE COG RAILWAY, TO ST. WOLFGANG.
This time the hike from St. Gilgen to St. Wolfgang does not follow the much-traveled pilgrimage route from Fürberg via the hermitage at Falkenstein, but one level higher over the Schafberg. This path is also exciting, historically significant and, if you wish, meditative. Right at the beginning, the Klostergut Aich invites you to a visit, then follows a long forest section, and finally the path meets the Schafbergbahn opened in 1893. The half-century anniversary year was one reason for an attractive “face-lifting”: renovation of the stops, new accesses, improvement of the track facilities, but above all a modern station building in St. Wolfgang. A total of 30 million euros were invested in the Schafbergbahn, which presents itself more than ever as a flagship for the entire Wolfgangsee region.Â

From the St. Gilgen Aich stop (line 156) the marked path 20 (Schafberg) leads past the Klostergut Aich along Winklstraße into the forest. The following one and a half hours on the consistently steep path are lacking in views, but the forest protects from excessive heat despite the west-facing exposure. Only after joining a forest road does a panoramic view open up, which naturally becomes breathtaking on the way towards the summit. The one-hour summit climb (1,782 m), or just the short detour to the Schafbergalm stop (1,364 m), are not mandatory but also offer the option to take the train downhill. The direct descent to St. Wolfgang branches off to the right; a small, hardly frequented but extremely atmospheric little summit is the Aignerriedel (1,326 m), located 10 minutes above the junction. After the two-hour descent, nice lakeside pubs await in St. Wolfgang, as well as the exhibition in the new station, the return trip by bus 546 (stop opposite the station) or perhaps even by boat to Strobl or St. Gilgen.   Â

From Salzburg Hbf (Südtiroler Platz) by bus 150 to St. Gilgen Hollweger, by bus 156 to St. Gilgen Aich. Or by bus 140 to Mondsee bus terminal and by bus 156 to St. Gilgen Aich. Return from St. Wolfgang Schafbergbahnhof by bus 546 to Strobl bus terminal (Salzburg climate tickets are valid) and further by bus 150.
Bus frequency line 150 every half hour, otherwise hourly. The transfer time in St. Gilgen between lines 150 and 156 is very tight, the more relaxing way is the route via Mondsee (lines 140 and 156).Â
