From Bad Ischl to Hoisnrad
ON THE TRAIL OF THE HABSBURGS: ASCENT VIA THE RETTENBACH VALLEY AND RETURN ON THE KAISER JUBILEE TRAIL.
On its route from Salzburg to Bad Ischl, bus 150 presents the Salzkammergut at its most beautiful. Passing Fuschlsee, then along Wolfgangsee, right into the center of the imperial summer residence and cultural capital 2024. Clearly, so much beauty is appealing; the bus 150 running every half hour is always well filled. The two-and-a-half-hour hike from the Bad Ischl bus station up to Hoisnradalm (968 m) has not been booked by any tourists, most likely they continue on to Hallstatt. Yet this round on the emperor’s trail is no less unique: insights into the Rettenbachklamm, views of Bad Ischl, and glimpses back to the good old days when the emperor was a guest at the Hoisnradalm, which we also visit.

From the bus terminal next to the k.u.k. station in Bad Ischl, the path leads over the railway bridge across the Traun and then follows the left-turning route "Rettenbachwildnis." This is well signposted through the town area past the romantic summer lime natural monument "Sterzen's Evening Seat" and shortly before the bridge over the Rettenbach turns right onto path 240 (Hoisnrad). Before the path gently rises after 15 minutes of walking, a short detour to the left to the Rettenbachklamm is definitely worth it. Back on forest path 240, after 2 km the now steeper 45-minute connection "Hoisnrad" turns right. From the sunny located snack station (open daily from May to October), the return path follows a 20-minute ascent back and now follows the attractive route 242 (Jubilee Trail) on the left back to Bad Ischl. The loop completes in Hinterstein, with the last section following the already known path. Another variant leads over the Rettenbach bridge, then turns left and immediately left again to a wonderful river access point (Gagarin Bay). The further path first follows the Rettenbach for 1.3 km to a footbridge and then the Traun for 700 m up to Bahnhofstraße.
