Gaißau and Hintersee were the epitome of ski fun close to the city. But it is also wonderful for hiking here. And the lake is still waiting …
The mountain name Spielberg is indeed a reference to the ptarmigan (= capercaillie), so it has little to do with fun and games, but thanks to good connections the hike from the Gaißau town center stop to the Spielberg is really pure play. Comfortable farm driveways, beautiful mixed forests and sunny alpine pastures alternate in the former ski area Gaißau-Hintersee. The steep descent on the north side, however, requires caution, as here there are often damp and slippery conditions depending on the season. In the middle, for recuperation, a fairy-tale high plateau opens up around the Grünaualm. Also, the end of the route could be extremely enjoyable with a long rest on the open shore of Hintersee.

Diagonally opposite the Gaißau town center stop is the short and steep Stampfbichlsteig leading to the elementary school. A lovingly renovated smithy by the Mühlbach recalls the workshop, which was in operation until the 1940s. After the elementary school, the unfortunately unmarked path leads briefly right, then left, and now follows the Mitterangerweg for 1.5 km to the junction “Spielberg, path 76 a” to the left. The forest and meadow path crosses over the wide chairlift descent and follows it to the chapel near the Spielbergalm. The route leads along the sun-drenched western ridge of Spielberg to the junction “Moser Monument” to the left. The partly damp forest path reaches the memorial after 30 minutes, which commemorates the hunter from Vordersee who was shot here in 1927 by a poacher. The steep, partly slippery path “45/852 Vordersee via Grünaualm” branches off exactly there to the right. From the beautiful farms in the idyllic district of Wurmwinkl, the route stays on the farm driveway. After a small detour to the shore of Hintersee, the path branches left at the inviting lakeside hut and then follows the road for 1 km to the Hotel Fischerwirt, with the Faistenau Vordersee stop in front of it.

From Hallein station west side with bus 450 to Gaißau town center. Return from Faistenau Vordersee with bus 157 to Faistenau Mechaniker Wörndl and then further with bus 155 to Salzburg main station.
