From Neumarkt to Mattsee

FOR FRIENDS OF LONG CROSSINGS, THE EXCITING PATH FROM NEUMARKT TRAIN STATION OVER THE TANNBERG TO THE SUMMER RESORT TOWN MATTSEE IS DEFINITELY AN APPEALING UNDERTAKING.

The 14-kilometer hike from Neumarkt station to the cultural and summer resort town of Mattsee is enriched with many quite different highlights. A very quiet, almost meditative highlight is right at the beginning the secluded former pilgrimage church on the Johannsberg; the real highest point is then an hour’s walk later at the Tannberg (786 m). From there opens a breathtaking panoramic view from the Wilder Kaiser to the Schafberg, but perhaps also a culinary summit experience, because the popular “Knödel-Wirtshaus” on the plateau is looking forward to many guests again after its renovation. On the west side of the Tannberg, a 4 km section on low-traffic access roads begins, which soon leads to the final descent into the Mattsee Weyerbucht.

Wegbeschreibung

At the newly redesigned Neumarkt train station, the path leads through the underpass in the direction of Köstendorf to the left and then after 200 m, at the height of the old station underpass, sharply to the right. Unfortunately, at exactly this important point the (pilgrim) signpost is missing, which then after a few steps appears in abundance pointing towards the quiet Baroque church on the Johannsberg. The special significance of the place is explained there via a QR code. Our path leads along the hill ridge down into the district of Gramling, then turning twice left and once right continuing into the pretty hamlet of Tannheim. The path to the Tannberg is finally signposted, but in the forest the marking again fails. Orientation-wise it is still easy to simply follow the eastern ridge, the last meters along the access road to the Tannberg. At the summit cross the path turns right and leads through the fir forest and along the forest edge past a solitary barn to the Haller farm. Now to the right and the next 3.5 km along the access road (= signposted bike route) to the state road. Along this following the green bike route sign towards Obern- and Unternberg and now on footpath no. 20 over the Weyerbucht into the town center of Mattsee (bus stop).
