The origin of the Seisenbergklamm gorge in Weißbach near Lofer is about 12,000 years ago. During the recent ice age, large parts of Salzburg were buried under a huge ice stream. By slowly flowing under high pressure, the glacial ice scraped the valley of the Saalach into a trough valley. After the ice melted, the Weißbach brook carved its bed through the enormous ice age deposits and into the underlying limestone rock. Over the millennia, the breathtaking natural monument of the Seisenbergklamm has been created.
