From Marktschellenberg to Hallein
A lively hike following the footsteps of „Sound of Music“ between the former salt rivals Berchtesgaden and Hallein.
Both the start and end points of the hike from Marktschellenberg to Hallein are closely linked to the former salt production. Between the two locations rises a steep ridge, consisting of Köppelschneid, Götschen, and Barmsteine, forming a natural border wall. It was here in the border area that a highly saline spring once appeared, which soon became a point of contention between the salt producers Prince Provostry of Berchtesgaden and Archdiocese of Salzburg. None of these disputes, which also led to the construction of Gutrat Castle in 1209, are noticeable today. On the contrary, there is lively exchange between the communities—and wonderfully connecting paths! One of these leads past the highest point of the route at perhaps the most moving filming location of the Hollywood production „Sound of Music“. In 1965 Julie Andrews danced and sang the earworm „The hills are alive“ here on the gentle hill in front of the Untersberg.

Wegbeschreibung
From the Marktschellenberg Market Square stop, the route leads right past the church and 200 m later follows path 27 to the left. First steep, then past well-kept estates, the path meets an access road and runs along it on the left side for 500 m to the next hairpin turn. Here, at the Ertl farm, the path turns right towards Mehlweg, crosses the sunny slope, and enters the beautiful mixed forest. At the next fork, the "Mehlweg" route first follows the access road for 450 m, then the cool forest path, and finally the Mehlweg—each time turning left. In a picturesque location to the west directly opposite, exactly in front of the Watzmann massif, is the mountain ridge where key scenes for „Sound of Music“ were filmed. At the wonderfully located Knollehen, follow route 459 („Hallein over Thürndl ruins“) to the right. The ascent of the Barmstein summit can be easily added if desired (30 min), but the town of Hallein, with its well-known excellent ice cream parlors and many affordable transport connections, also naturally exerts a strong attraction and is reached in an hour.
