From Voglau to Oberscheffau
A DISCOVERY ROUTE ALONG THE LAMMER TO THE HIDDEN AUCHBACHFALL AND THROUGH THE LAMMERöFEN ON TO OBERSCHEFFAU.
The Lammer is a 41-kilometre-long tributary of the Salzach, which flows around the Tennengebirge. The probably most spectacular section from the source near Lungötz to the confluence with the Salzach is the Lammerklamm (or Lammeröfen) in Oberscheffau. In Salzburg, the gorges are often called Öfen, a term said to originate from Celtic. The name Lammer, according to the German River Name Book, means “river that flows through the gorge.” Before the Lammer rushes through the distinctive bend in front of Oberscheffau with breathtaking force, it receives reinforcement from the Aubachfall. Unlike the Lammeröfen, this natural spectacle is hardly known. The path connecting Voglau with Oberscheffau also leads a quiet existence. So it’s high time to explore, especially since this beautiful route is ideal for public transport hiking.

The starting point is the Voglau – Lammerbrücke bus stop. The route crosses the bridge and turns left onto the road towards Weitenau. After 2 km in Pichl, path 13 then turns left and shortly afterwards reaches the side path that leads left in five minutes to a viewing platform with a view of the Aubachfall. Back on the main path, it continues to the last houses, then a narrow path crosses the steep forest slopes. After 20 minutes, a wide access road begins again, leading down through the Wallingwinkl district to the entrance of the Lammerklamm. A short detour immediately branches off right into the “Dark Gorge,” where the overhanging rock walls almost touch. Another highlight at the other end of the gorge is the narrow bridge over the roaring Lammer. It gets cosier towards the end, where the river has more space again and opens up nice banks for resting. The bus stop is located in front of the Lammerklause inn.

From Golling-Abtenau train station (forecourt) with bus 470 or bus 471 to Voglau at Abtenau Lammerbrücke. Return from Oberscheffau town centre with bus 470 or bus 471. Very good frequency, also on weekends and public holidays.
