Take off in Bischofshofen
The famous Paul Ausserleitner ski jump hill is impossible to miss. A bit more hidden, but equally breathtaking, is the Gainfeld waterfall very nearby.
Fortunately, the circular hike starts at the station, as the first part of the route leads straight through the charming town of Bischofshofen. Besides attractive shopping and dining options, the quiet cultural monuments enchant. These include the three churches, equipped with Gothic frescoes and valuable altars. The courtyard between the Kastenturm and town hall with the dominant chestnut tree in the center is also a true oasis of calm. Quite noisy and sparkling is the Gainfeld waterfall, which can be “climbed” via 401 steps. The fine water mist is even said to have healing properties. The breathtaking view from the former fortress “Pongowe” located above is also impressive. Those wanting a longer walk can extend the hike to Mitterberghütten and return by train or bus, or on foot along the Salzach River back to Bischofshofen.

From the station it is only a few meters uphill to the center, then turning left past the tourism office and opposite turning right over Raiffeisenstraße to the Romanesque Georg chapel and the cemetery. Follow the signposted paths 3 or 4 to the right and then on the left past the ski jump area to the waterfall in 10 minutes. Via the daring staircase construction to the Bachsfall castle ruins, then briefly towards Bürglhö̈h, but immediately again a few meters steeply downhill to the junction of the cultural trail (sign) to the right. The narrow forest path soon changes into a forest road ending at the Götschen chapel. Now there are two options: the short one leads left to the plague cemetery and closes the cultural loop at the waterfall access. The one-hour additional loop via Mitterberghütten follows straight downhill along the access road, crosses the B164 into the Zimmerberg settlement and reaches the Gasteiner Straße (B 159) via the Götschen path. Opposite is the Mitterberghütten station (S3) or after the underpass turn left for a 40-minute walk along footpaths along the Salzach to the footbridge and over the railway overpass back to Bischofshofen.

Anfahrt mit den Öffis
From Salzburg main station almost every half hour with EC, RJ, S3 or REX to Bischofshofen station.
For the return trip to Bischofshofen from Mitterberghütten station with S3 or by bus 50 from Mitterberghütten Barbarahof or by bus 50 from Mitterberghütten Kindergarten.
